Naples is a former Greek trading center established around 600 BC. The city was later conquered by the ancient Romans and became the residence of several emperors and other important people during it’s history. Naples is the quintessential real-life Italy, where everything is enjoyed in all its chaotic glory. During your tour you will feel as though if you are in one of those black & white movies but you’re not. It’s a 21st century city where modern-day Neapolitans live, work and shop. The tiny streets are crowded not with tourists but with locals picking up ingredients for dinner, taking their kids too school and hanging out laundry between the buildings. This is some of what your tour guide will show you….The essence of the city is not just the history and highlights, that we will be sure to show you, but it is also the explosion of language, food, smells and customs that Naples offers. While you sample a delicious freshly baked sfogliatella or a piece of fried pizza, you will enjoy the highlights like the famous Street of Spaccanapoli, Piazza del Gesù (the symbolic historical centre of the city) and the Cloister of Santa Chiara and its church. A stop in the Cappella of Sansevero to admire the master piece of the “Cristo Velato” is a must.
Tour Description
Your tour will start at 9:00am with an amazing walk through the street of Naples. Depending on your interests we will be sure to fit in time for a nice lunch and you can feel free to discuss the options with your driver during the morning. After Lunch, you driver will take you to Pompeii driving over the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano in the mainland of Europe. Pompeii used to be a resort town in the South of Naples, located on the western coast of Italy. Many wealthy Romans had "country homes" there. At it`s largest, Pompeii had a population of approximately 20,000 people.
On a fateful summer`s day in 79 AD, Mt Vesuvius erupted, spewing volcanic ash and lapilli (a small, lightweight pebbly material) over the village of Pompeii. Most of the locals fled the eruption but an estimated 2000 people did not and died from toxic gasses or were buried in the eruption along with the city. Lasting for almost a full day, Pompeii was buried under some 25 feet of volcanic material and this fascinating city was petrified and was condemned to remain as such.
While Pompeii remained in the local`s memories, as time passed it`s location was lost. Rediscovered in the 1700`s, excavation was started, but not until the mid 1800`s was there any meticulous recording of the discoveries. Amazingly preserved by the lapilli and ash, much information from Pompeii has been regained. Almost 2,000 years later, you have the opportunity to explore the preserved ruins of this famous disaster as you walk over ruts and paths hewn in the stone by thousands of feet and wagons from times gone by.
