Mangiare e bere (eat and drink) great food and wine, these are the key words of the day. When you have had your fill of history, take some time out to please your palate and see the refreshing countryside around Rome just a 20 minute drive from the city walls. On this tour, clients also have a chance to visit the catacombs on the Old Appian way where you can also have a tour inside with a local guide before arriving to the Castelli Romani region.
Depending on the time of year and day of the week we can visit beautiful cellars, have panoramic vistas of vineyards and the hills of the area and visit a few small medieval villages. Our first stop is the breathtaking Lake Albano, the deepest lake in Lazio, formed by two ancient volcanic craters.
Next is the the ancient village of Nemi overlooking Lake Nemi, and it is famous for “Norcinerie” which are small shops where you can find fresh, homemade prosciutto, salamis, sausages and cheeses. Here Porcini mushrooms and of course, strawberries are in abundance.
Time flies while we are having fun and soon it is time for lunch. That means “Pagnanelli” in Castel Gandolfo where we will enjoy some pasta “fatta in casa” (homemade) and the splendor of the view of Lake Albano. If you would like, we can also arrange for finger foods and a wine tasting of some excellent Italian vintages enhanced by the helpful guidance of a prefessional sommelier. This incredible restaurant boasts more than 35,000 bottles of wine in their cellars that are built in an ancient volcano. Our driver guide is happy to give you restaurant suggestions to suit your tastes and budget and the mention of Pagnanelli is solely our recommendation.
After lunch we will drive to the village Castel Gandolfo. Here we will take some time to stretch our legs walking through the medieval village which is anchored by the summer residence of the Pope for over 500 years right in the main square before returning to Rome, relaxed and at peace.
Catacombs Ticket Information: If you would like to visit the Catacombs please be sure to tell your driver guide and note that this is an optional stop.
